 Martin Luther King, who was born January 15, 1929, was a real patriot who loved his country, a truly representative of afro-american race who struggled for his rights and an amazing preacher who believed that God created everyone equal. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia 1929. In 1963 he was named Time magazine’s Man of the year and in 1964 he was given the Nobel Peace Prize. “I have a dream” is a famous M.L.King’s speech that considered to be a masterpiece as the author uses a rich language to speak about the life of a black nation in America and about his hopes and beliefs.“I have a dream” by Martin Luther King is a speech he gave in August 1963 from the steps of Lincoln Memorial. Maybe it was a simple coincidence maybe a purposful choice, but it was Abraham Lincoln who fought for the rights of afro-americans years before.  

Martin Luther King starts his speech with a line that echos to the speech of one of the most legendary person of his own time-Abraham Lincoln. The main message of “I have a dream” speech is that all people are created equal. At the beginning of the speech he gives a reader a background about the situation the Negro were in and explains why the situation has not changed grately. He mentiones that even though “a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand, signed the Emancipation Proclamation” that made all slaves free, the Negro “is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation”. Martin Luther King speaks how they can improve the situation. He suggests that people should not “satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred”.Since not only afro-americans came to hear his speech, Martin Luther King speaks to everyone, including the white people, calling them “brothers and sisters”. The author encourages people; he lifts their spirits by suggesting not to give up, to strike for what they believe in.

One of the things that make this speech significant is its eloquence, poetry and various vocabulary. First of all, Martin Luther King uses a lot of repetitions to emphasize, to add more expressivity. The repetitions create a special rhythm of the speech. The author says ‘one hundred years later’ to mention that after such a long period of time, as one century, the situation of the Negro has not changed as it had been promissed before. He uses “now is the time” to encourage people, to light a fire in their hearts to fight for what they need, to stand for what they value. The most famous phrase ‘I have a dream” is repeated 9 times to make an accent that no matter how terrible the situation of the Negro is, no matter what obsticles and injustice they face, the afro-american nation will always believe in the best, will always “have a dream”. Not less significant is the repitition of a phrase “let freedom ring”. The key word is freedom. Actually it is the freedom that afro-americans have been longing for; it is the struggling for the freedom that inspired Martin Luther King to write this speech and deliever it in front of the thousands of people. The use of different metaphors make this speech poetic, melodious. Such metaphors as “…the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity”, “…America has given the Negro people a bad check; a check which has come back marked “insufficient funds”, “…the bank of justice is bankrupt” add more dramatic notes to the speech as they influence people’s minds greatly. It is also mentioned that Martin Luther King uses a lot of references to other books, documents. For example, he refers to the Declaration of Independence as that document was a huge step towards the rights of colored people. “When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.” Moreover, the author mentiones the words from the Constitution: “ We hold these truths to be self-evident;that all men are created equal”. As the fact, the Constitution is the official document that consolidates the bases of rights and freedoms of every citizen. It is not a surprise why Martin Luther King used the words from the American Constitution as a confirmation to his words.Since the  key message of ‘I have a dream” speech is that all people are created equal, Martin Luther King speaks about the past, present and a future of a black men to show that the situation of the Negro can be described in the word absolutely opposite to equality. For many years “the Negro is languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land”. The most dramatic part is “exile in his own land” because there were no white man who would be restrained in his/her rights. The author shows how bad the situation was by saying : “Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality”, by calling the Negro “veterans of creative suffering”. 

It was hardly possible to find a white man whose freedom would be limited and held down by the cruelty and prosecution. Moreover, the main purpose of the State is to create the conditions for the free and dignified development of its citizens, to satisfy all their needs for justice and freedom. However, the situation of the Negro people was different. “…We are not satisfied and will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream”. Martin Luther King says that “now is the time to rise from the dark”, “Now is the time to open the doors of new opportunity…” It is said that when a door closes, a window opens, however, for the Negro not only the door was closed but there were not even a slightly hint on a window that would lead to the new life. It is not a surprise that the author names the summer “sweltering of the Negro’s legitimate discontent” because the constant spirit of the Negro is always ready to fight for his dreams. With vivid persuasiveness Martin Luther King says that “there will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights”, as rights and freedom are all the Negro has been passionatly struggling for.

Four famous words “I have a dream”, which are constatly repeated in the speech, express the hopes of the author. No matter how many difficulties and frustrative moments the Negro race has, they all should “still have a dream”. By speaking about his own hopes, Martin Luther King bears a wish that the people who come to listen to him will also believe that the situation can be improved in friendly non-violent way. “We will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.” The author hopes that “ …we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day”. The important message of his beliefs is he wishes that afro-americans will be happy and satisfied not only in their own world but in the world of white people as well, together with the white people. “…little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers.” Martin Luther King pictures the dream of a better, fairer life of harmony between white and black people. He speaks about the time when slavers and slaveholders will sit together “at the table of brotherhood”. The author wishes that one day people will not be judged by the color of their skin, by their religion but by the features of their character. Moreover, he desires to see America a great nation where his dream is finally realised as “it is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream”. Martin Luther King knows that only together they can improve the situation, only by holding each other’s hand they can make the world a better place, only by supporting each other they “will be able to hew out of the mountainof despair a stone of hope”.“I have a dream” is a remarkable speech that left an unforgettable trace in people’s hearts.The speech that he adresses to the people is sacred and immortal. By demonstrating that the real faith is infinite and can help to achieve everything, Martin Luther King helped to improve the situation of afro-amercians. Right after his speech President Kennedy started a compain for improvement the rights of citizens that led to the elimination of racial segregation in most of the states. By delievering ‘I have a dream” speech, Martin Luther King showed that with strenght and support of each other all people can have their dreams come true.
